ERIE, Pa. — Utica College goalie Michalyn Winkler (Jr., Barto, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) made 18 saves, but Grove City College’s Elizabeth Andrews (So., Newberg, Ore./Newberg (Veritas Academy)) scored five times as the Wolverines picked up an 11-6 victory over the Pioneers to make the 2018 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Championship Fifth Place game.
Competing at the David M. Hallman Aquatics Center, Grove City (5-8, 4-5 CWPA Division III) never trailed in pulling away from the Pioneers in the first half and hanging on over the final 16 minutes of action.
The Wolverines, who previously finished first (2010, 2011, 2012), second (2013), fourth (2015), fifth (2014, 2016) and sixth (2017) in the history of the championship, jumped on the scoreboard 35 seconds into the game as Brynna Bartlett (Sr., Olive Branch, Miss./St. George’s) pounded a ball into the cage with 7:25 left on the first quarter clock.
Utica (0-13, 0-9 CWPA Division III) responded at 6:23 as Emily Czerwonka (So., Souderton, Pa./Souderton Area) dropped in an equalizer, but Tessa Leatherwood (Fr., Hurst, Texas) put the Wolverines out in front to stay with a strike at the 5:01 mark to make it 2-1 after eight minutes of competition.
Andrews enlarged the margin to 3-1 49 seconds into the second quarter by finding the back of the cage at the 7:11 mark.  Leatherwood (5:43, man-up), Abby Spicher (Jr, Erie, Pa./McDowell) (5:02, natural) and Andrews (1:14, natural) followed with back-to-back-to-back scores to cushion the lead to 6-1.
However, Utica’s Krystiana Rehrig (Sr., Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) snapped Grove City’s 5-0 spurt by connecting on a shot with 59 seconds remaining in the first half to make it 6-2 at the break.
Spicher (5:34) and Andrews (4:13, 2:20) opened the second half with a string of goals to widen the lead to a game-high seven goals (9-2) prior to Daniela Hannah (So., Dalton, Georgia/Northwest Whitfield) responding for the Pioneers with 2:05 on the clock to set the scoreboard at 9-3 in favor of Utica through 24 minutes of play.
The teams traded goals in the fourth quarter as Rehrig (6:38), Hnyla Sloan (Jr., Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) (3:15) and Aisha Kelly (Jr., Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon) (1:07) delivered for Utica, while Leatherwood (5:17) and Andrews (3:31) closed out Grove City’s offense.
For Grove City, co-Player of the Game Andrews was joined in posting multi-goal contests by Leatherwood (three) and Spicher (two).  Bartlett also notched a solo strike in support of a combined three saves by netminders Carolyn Ebel (Sr., East McKeesport, Pa./Oakland Catholic) and Rachel Blasdell (Jr., Leesburg, Va./Homeschooled).
The win advances the Wolverines into the Fifth Place game at 10:20 a.m. on Sunday, April 15, against the victor of a consolation game between the host Lions of Penn State Behrend and Division III No. 10-ranked Monmouth College.
For Utica, Rehrig racked up a pair of goals with Sloan, Kelly, Hannah and Czerwonka each putting away single scores in support of a co-Player of the Game effort from Winkler.
The Pioneers will wrap-up their 2018 campaign at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, April 15, in the CWPA Division III Championship Seventh Place game against the fallen from the Penn State Behrend-vs.-Monmouth consolation game.
