Johns Hopkins University Announces 2017 Recruiting Class

BALTIMORE, Md. -- Johns Hopkins University water polo head coach Ted Bresnahan announced his incoming class that features seven players who will compete for spots on the 2017 team. Bresnahan begins his 27th season this fall and with 389 career wins is the winningest coach in program history.

Coming to Homewood this Fall are Oscar Goodell, Nico Ivanov, John Murphy, Tim Peterson, Mark Preston, Stephen Schmidt and Olin Shipstead. Hopkins is set to open the season on September at the United States Naval Academy's Labor Day Open. The Blue Jays return 13 letterwinners from last year's squad, including All-America selections Giorgio Cico and John Wilson. Cico led the squad with 51 goals and 77 points while Wilson posted a career-best 212 saves and 43 steals.

Led team to back-to-back CIF playoff appearances as a junior and senior • led club team to Junior Olympic finishes in 2015 and 2016 • two-time CIF Scholar-Athlete and four-time member of Principal's Honor Roll • received Michael Grier Citizenship Award for outstanding character as a senior • also swam for three years • sister, Maddie, plays water polo at George Washington.

Nico Ivanov
6'1" • 160

Del Mar Water Polo Club

Four-year letter-winner • captain and leading goal-scorer with 93 goals as a senior • earned Fourth Team All-America honors (California-Hawaii) as a senior • two-time All-CIF San Diego Section selection • awarded Willie Calabrese Memorial Scholarship • as a junior, led team to first San Diego CIF Division 1 Championship in school history • led club team to silver medal at Junior Olympics in 2015 • participated at 2015 USA Cadet Water Polo National Team Selection Camp • three-time USA Water Polo All-Academic (Outstanding) • three-time San Diego Union Tribune All-Academic Team • AP Scholar with Distinction.

John Murphy

Tim Peterson

Led team to MCAL and NCS Division 2 titles as a sophomore • led team to league championship match as a junior and senior • team co-captain as a senior • named All-MCAL as a senior • led team in assists as a junior and senior • also led NCS in assists as a senior • AP Scholar • three-time USA Water Polo All-Academic • also swam four years at Redwood.

Mark Presten
6'0" • 170
College Preparatory School
Lamorinda Water Polo

Played eight years for Lamorinda Water Polo Club and four years on the Olympic Development Team (Pacific Zone) • twice selected for ODP National Training Selection Camp • two-time USA Water Polo All-Academic • also swam at The College Preparatory School and was team captain • selected First Team All-Bay Counties East and qualified for the state championship in swimming.

Stephen Schmidt
5'9" • 170

Lamorinda Water Polo

Captained team to DAL league title and NCS Division 1 championship as a senior • named All-DAL Second Team as a senior • selected to NSC Senior All-Star team • awarded Curtis Bottomley Award (for Motivation, Achievement, Leadership and Commitment) • led team to DAL league title and NCS Division runner-up finish as a junior • helped team to NCS Division 1 championship as a sophomore • two-time USA Water Polo All-Academic (Outstanding) • played seven years for Lamorinda Water Polo Club • two-time participant at USA Water Polo Olympic Development National Training Selection Camp • also swam for four years and captained team as a senior • eight-time NCS Scholar-Athlete • treasurer and team captain for Miramonte Model UN.

Olin Shipstead

Named team MVP and Fifth Team All-American (California-Hawaii) as a senior • two-time captain • led team to league championship as a freshman, sophomore and junior • earned First Team All-CIFSS Division 2, All-Los Angeles County and All-Marmonte honors as a senior • led team to CIFSS Quarterfinals as a junior (Division 1) and senior (Division 2) • earned Second Team All-Marmonte honors as a junior • two-time Most Improved Player • also swam for three years • seven-time CIFSS Scholar-Athlete • class Valedictorian • AP Scholar with Distinction • National Merit Scholarship • two-time USA Water Polo All-Academic (Outstanding) • four-year member of the honor roll.
